Starting the Week with Awareness

Updated: Mar 17

A mindful start to the week can help align our emotional intelligence and value systems with intention, clarity, and healthier habits.

Monday mornings often arrive with a sense of urgency, but approaching them with awareness can shift the entire tone of the week. As Dr. Robert Graves explains, starting the week from awareness instead of urgency creates space to observe our thoughts and behaviors before reacting to them. At EIVSOM Psychosocial, this perspective aligns with the idea that growth begins when we intentionally engage our emotions and value systems rather than simply responding to pressure.

Even within families, the practice is ongoing. Graves openly acknowledges that learning never ends: “At no point… am I telling you that I’ve got it all sorted out.” He describes returning to conversations about emotional intelligence and value systems, awareness, and understanding, using them as an anchor to start the week with purpose. Revisiting priorities, making lists, and focusing on what truly matters helps create habits that support healthier emotional intelligence and value systems over time.

This process reflects a core EIVSOM principle: observation and monitoring. Graves notes, “the observation and monitoring… is as important as the emotional intelligence and the value systems.” By paying attention to our patterns and adjusting intentionally, we begin forming habits that produce different outcomes. Whether it is Monday morning or the start of any new week, taking a moment to monitor our emotional and value systems can transform routine moments into opportunities for growth.
