A reflection on authenticity, observation, and awareness while sharing ideas about emotional intelligence and value systems through social media.

In a recent reflection, Dr. Robert Graves shared the unexpected personal learning that comes from recording short videos and speaking directly to an unseen audience. What began as a simple communication exercise quickly became an opportunity for deeper observation. As he explains, “so much of it is observation and monitoring of my emotional intelligence and value systems.” This awareness lies at the heart of the EIVSOM approach, where understanding our emotional intelligence and value systems helps us better interpret our reactions, motivations, and interactions with others.
During the process, Dr. Graves noticed subtle shifts in energy and self-perception while recording. “My emotional levels change. I start off and I’m quite upbeat and then I become probably just more and more self-conscious as I go.” These observations highlight how closely our emotional intelligence and value systems interact with our sense of authenticity. By becoming aware of these shifts, individuals can learn to communicate more genuinely and understand how internal states influence outward expression.
The videos are also intended as a starting point for thoughtful social reflection. As Dr. Graves clarifies, “I’m not trying to say I know everything… and I’m definitely not trying to be critical of society.” Instead, the goal is gentle observation—an invitation to collectively reflect on why things are the way they are in our postmodern world. Through awareness of our emotional intelligence and value systems, we can begin to ask meaningful questions about behavior, culture, and personal growth, opening the door to deeper understanding and constructive dialogue.
